An Ancient Herbal Medicine with Modern Medical Applications

Cosmetic & Skin Healing Benefits of Guggul

Clinical studies show that guggul may help treat various skin conditions, including acne.

Guggul formulations have traditionally been used in Ayurveda to treat a number of inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne and canker sores.13 In modern clinical trials guggul has been shown to be an effective acne treatment comparable to antibiotics—including severe nodulocystic forms of the condition.6,12 Research suggests these benefits may be because components of guggul reduce sebum secretion and inflammation associated with acne.6

The guggul-based Ayurvedic formula Triphala guggulu may help inhibit the effects of snake bite venom. In vitro studies have demonstrated that Triphala guggulu is a potent anti-hyaluronidase substance—inhibiting the tissue-degrading enzyme hyaluronidase.56

Proven to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, guggul has historically been shown to be an effective treatment for a variety of skin diseases (e.g., psoriasis and eczema) and may also improve the health and beauty of skin with its anti-wrinkle properties. 60
